The Sound Curator Bridging Music and Culture in Boston

Boston’s music and nightlife scene has no shortage of talent, but DJ Real P stands in a lane of his own. Born Chimel Idiokitas, this Roxbury native of Nigerian and Liberian heritage has become a powerhouse in DJing, music production, event curation, and community building. More than just a DJ, he’s a cultural architect, blending genres and influences to create a sound that reflects both his roots and the dynamic energy of the city.

Real P’s love for music started early, inspired by his father, a self-proclaimed “vinyl junkie,” and five older brothers who introduced him to a wide range of sounds. By the age of 15, he was already behind the decks, carving out a unique style that fuses hip-hop, R&B, Afrobeats, house, and soul, giving Boston nightlife a soundtrack that resonates across generations. His work as the creator of the celebrated event series SILK has elevated Boston’s R&B scene, bringing people together in a space where music, culture, and community thrive.

But his impact goes beyond the nightlife. DJ Real P is not just spinning records—he’s creating spaces for culture to flourish. Honored as an Embrace Boston Artist in Residence in 2022, and named DJ of the Year at the 2019 Boston Music Awards, his influence continues to expand. Now, as the Assistant Vice President for Community Relations at Northeastern University, he’s working to bridge gaps between institutions and the city’s diverse communities. Whether he’s on stage, in the studio, or leading initiatives, DJ Real P is proving that music is more than entertainment—it’s a force for connection, celebration, and change.
